Dig is much more useful for serious DNS debugging. And it doesn't barf
if a nameserver can't resolve itself, a problem which continually irked
people with nslookup. An inability to resolve itself is fairly common
with a broken nameserver, and you tend not to need to debug working
ones.

Nslookup is deprecated by the ISC, its authors, BTW. It's not just
Debian. The ISC will be withdrawing it soon by the look of it.
