80TB on a normal pc. 

Seriously. I normally use the same amount as my ram. I think swap size is
heavily dependant on what you are doing with a PC nowadays. If you are
running a massive Oracle database you will require a lot of ram for any
performance which will impact any room you have left for X or any other
program.

Add up all the total running memory of all the applications that you are
expecting to use on your machine at the same time subtract the ram from this
figure and you will have your required swap space.

If you want to see something eat memory run xcdroast and read an Audio disk
in. While doing this use >$free -m to look at your ram disappear.
