	jpegtopnm file.jpg | pnmtops

The whole point about pnm was that it was an intermediate format that
you could convert stuff to and from. That way, N file formats only
require you to write 2N converters, rather than N^2.

The pnm format is starting to show its age, though, lacking an alpha
channel, and things like gamma, colour spaces etc., and sitting
on my pile of "things I'll get around to writing one day" is a
pngplus/netpng suite that does the same using PNG. Even PNG doesn't
cover all your bases, but it gets all the really relevant ones. The
only thing that does it all is TIFF, and TIFF is overly complex, and
more to the point, doesn't play nicely with piped input.
