We have run linux on the old HP XL workstations that came with an HP
tweaked matrox card and proprietory extensions to X. They are quite
close to the top of my hate list.

Our standard workstation spec is dual athlon + nvidia quadro DCC. The
nvidea drivers have been giving us problems, however the support we got
from nvidea was pretty good. The 2314 drivers seem pretty solid
although there are some issues with remote SGI-GL extensions. We are
waiting on a bug-fix from nvidea. We run Maya 3.01, Maya 4.0 and Shake
on these machines.

We have also tried firegl2 cards which seemed OK but we never really
put them through their paces properly.

Wildcat's are very expensive :-)
