[Gllug] squid and ftp

I am having difficulty with squid as an ftp proxy.  It works from a browser
when downloading from ftp sites but not from the command line the linux
nooks I have either don't cover it or say squid doesn't support ftp. the
message I get in terminal is service or name not found but the client proxy
setings are definately set to 10.10.0.1:3128 (10.10.0.1 being the proxy
address)
have I missed some service is it a squid thing is it a client or a server
thing?

any suggestions would be appreciated
