1. If you're able to update the microcode, then you already have root
anyway, and hence can do any damage you like.
2. The microcode changes are volatile (i.e., they don't survive a power
cycle). Admittedly, that doesn't affect those of us that leave our
machines on permanently, though :-)
In principle, though, it should be possible to write a microcode virus,
but you don't have much in the way of tools to work with.
