While googling for information about getting font-lock working on the
console, I ran into a post from someone mentioning the fact that they
had to set their TERM to "xterm-color". Not sure if that's the solution,
but it might help....

Setting your TERM to "linux" might also be a way to go if syntax
highlighting works on the console.
