No, they aren't.  I had a motherboard and modem smoked by a lightning
strike, once.  At the very least I would recommend a combination
surge-proteced adapter and modem protector like the Belkin models

The £30 price tag is typical.  The cheapo £10-£15 pound items you can
pick up in various places are not enough.

If you're willing to spend £60 or more then there are some cheap soho
UPS units on the market.

Either way it's good insurance against the cost and hassle of replacing
frazzled components.
