[Gllug] codepage madness

Ok I can type the £ symbol in nedit.
xterm has every character double spaced and typing '£' gives a # and a
return to next line. So do all the other terminals. this seems not to be a
font issue since if I set the terms to use the nedit font they still give
the same results.
help!
