just an addendum, really:
most cameras as far as i know save as jpeg files, with a choice of 'quality 
levels'. Even for closeups the lowest quality (in 640x480) seems remarabvly 
good.
the two main competitors for memory cards are compact flash and smartmedis. 
you cna also get sony memory stick cameras (oddly enough these only seem to 
be made by sony. although i may well be wrong)
you cna also get plugin usb readers for the cards which *should* just function 
as a removable disk.

why would you thump anyone for mentioning dixons?
anyway, ebay always has a stack. you can buy them in loads of high street 
stores, mentioning no names...
and the prices really aren't all that different.

my zoom lens apparently is equivalent to f=38 to 228mm on a 'real' camera.
