Well, I'd like to thank everybody for their input on this one! You've all
given me a *load* of food for thought!

Using Jonathans reasoning, I think C++ may be the way to go for me (every
Java manual I have discusses coming from C++ to Java, so this does seem the
obvious choice).

So, armed with the URL's you've all sent me (cheers!!!!), and my credit card
for a couple of C++ books, I am going to dip my toe into the sea of Linux
Programming, and see what I can do.....
