I've been looking with intent at this sort of thing. On the media/GUI front
I decided SDL and wxWindows were the best options respectively. wxWindows
doesn't (yet) have sound support so SDL looks good in that regard. Both of
these will run on almost anything you care to mention - MacOS9/X, Linux,
Win32, other UNIXes, etc...

wxWindows looks particularly impressive because it can give a native look
and feel to an application because it is a wrapper for native function calls
on whatever platform. I was very impressed.

Now all I have to do is conquer my general fear and loathing of GUI
programming and I'll be set.

I didn't like Qt because of the commercial licensing on non-Linux platforms,
and general comments from a more experienced co-worker about some of the
weirdness in the API - I'd elaborate if I could.
