Dunno wtf Sony VAIO support line is telling me then. These people
must have hay in their heads... .

Will try and find someone who is less of a pain to deal with.

BTW. If anyone comes across drivers for Win98 (argh) for the
CdRW/DVD, softModem (yak) and touchpad - please let me know.
Questioning Google was frustrating and fruitless.
