Steve,

Looks like there are two ways of doing it:


Setting backup-inhibited to t:

(setq backup-inhibited 't)

Setting make-backup-files to nil.
(setq make-backup-files 'nil)

This is just from looking in the docs - the appros and appros-variable
commands let you avoid a lot of searching.
