You might give openldap a bash - (www.openldap.org). I have tried it,
and it seems pretty good. Adding data to the database can be done in a
few ways, the easiest would probably be to export the current address
book to an LDIF file, and import it into OpenLDAP.
Updating the data would involve more though - there are some modules for
perl and python which make it fairly easy to manipulate the entries in
the directory. You will have to hack something together.
