Have a look at convert in the imagemagick package. It lists mpeg as one
of the formats it can handle, and the manpage also tell you how you can
create a gif-animation from a sequence of images. It shouldn't be too
much different to create an mpeg from a sequence instead, so I guess it
will work.
Untested at this end though. HTH :)
