[Gllug] Booting from SCSI CD

AFAIK, different SCSI systems have different ways to go about it. In my
recent experience, the Adaptec SCSI system seems to work very well in
picking up bootable cds. However, I recently tried to rejuvenate an old
Compaq Proliant 300 (a might 150MHz of processor power to play with...
but it did have 36Gb of storage) by installing Linux, but came unstuck
due to the built in SCSI controllers.

There were various other factors which made it difficult, not least
that my first alternative plan of action (stick an IDE hard disk and CD
drive in the machine) fell foul of the fact that the server was built
with SCSI only architecture. The solution for my needs was to use a
different machine; for your purposes, an IDE cd drive might do the trick
- if you've got the requisite IDE channel to plug into.

I have an LSI Logic SCSI card and for the first time I need to boot off
it
(kernel panic, need to use linuxcare cd). I have tried to set it up to
do
this but with no joy whatsoever.

I have looked in the BIOS for the card itself and noticed that it has a
boot
option but it is greyed out. Help tells me that I can use it for
booting but
I have no idea how to go about changing the options to make it work . I
have
tried quite a few options and no joy. Is there something I am missing
as I
just thought that it would be a BIOS change.

My CD is on chain 0. I have put it there to be able to boot from it as
instruced in the help for the card.
