Depending on the symptoms, you may want to consider giving it a good
whack (I kid you not). A colleague of mine diagnosed a hard drive we had
at work as having a flat ball bearing, gave it a couple of strategic
(and quite hefty) knocks, et voila..

..'course at that point we copied all the data off and disposed of it.
