Personally i prefer to use something like Jabber - it's got
a nice server side transport layer which can connect to other
IM systems like AIM, Yahoo, MSN on your behalf. Now if only
someone would fix the IRC backend...

You might want to give KSirc a go then. It's a pretty simple
interface which can be set to auto-open new windows for each
one-on-one conversation or to leave the whole lot inline.
