Most config files are also owned by root.

Unless you've got to grips with the su methods of the TRAMP remote
file-access addon to [X]Emacs, you'll have to edit them by running Emacs
as root.

This is strongly contraindicated ;) I think that even vi is rather too
complex to run as root: certainly the Emacsen are *far* beyond whatever
threshold there may be.

If you head down the Emacs route, pick Emacs if you want GNU, and XEmacs
if you want scads of packages. Other than that there are no real
differences that the casual user would care about.

... while I sit in X all the time, using the jmknappen tiny fonts, for
the same reason. (Gotta have graphics, though, if just for webbery,
preview-latex testing, and the absence of that horrible klonging sound
the monitor makes as it switches scan rates, which really doesn't sound
good for it in large servings.)
