The problem is not so much with the ADSL kit here in the office but
upstream with easy net and bt.  Working nights I tend to hit scheduled works at
about 2-4 in the morning.  Traceroute shows 700-900ms latency if that is
the right term.

I think it is this that is causing the SSH connection to terminate at
times.  If I am wrong about this please feel free to correct me.
