[Gllug] floppy disc access

Hi all,
I have recently installed Mandrake 9.0 rc3 onto some old hardware, and 
everything is working except the floppy disk. It doesn't show up even 
when I add the line
  /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto user,defaults,noauto 0 0
to /etc/fstab
When I try to format a floppy with kfloppy I get
"Cannot access /dev/fd0u1440
make sure the device exists and you have write permission to it".
There doesn't appear to be a /dev/fd0 file.
Any ideas how to get the floppy disk recognized and mounted would be 
appreciated.
