When I first had to get java up and running on linux 18 months ago all the reports on the web said that the blackdown version was quicker and more robust than either the IBM or Sun version. And yes I will always make an attempt to use GPL or equivalent where possible, so that was also a consideration. 

Plus I seem to remember the downloads from IBM and Sun were pretty monstrous. All the extra things that come with them are probably nice if you are a serious java developer, but I just wanted java up and runing quickly.

Also blackdown is a much cooler name :-)
