Bah, just fixed it... combination of my stupidity and Redhat being 
broken =) needed to edit the ypinit script so that it worked.

http://personal.ie.cuhk.edu.hk/~sfluk/linuxnisslave.html is what I had 
to do to the script, it seems that it is broken in redhat 7.2 in the 
same way as it has been since redhat 6.2.
