I think that adding a Samba file server to an existing workgroup is a 
possibility, I wouldn't try to add one to a Windows domain. One of the 
problems that small organisations have is making backups and it's easier 
to do that if you have a server.

There are always a few people who are between jobs and aren't able to 
accept cash but wouldn't have to declare expenses or a meal.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is the question of timing. 
Charities, like most other organisations, tend to keep to office hours. 
Being able to spare a few hours is OK but it on-site installations 
probably need to be done between 9 and 5 on a weekday.
