Using big brother to monitor 100+ machines in the production cluster at
work and it is a pretty good the standard test handle most things and we
have got a lot of custom scripts to monitor some company specifics.  It
is not GPL but free ( as in beer) to use in mos situations the obvious
execption is if you are a company making money from monitoring other
peoples systems.  I do have some bitches about it see below.

We have BB firing off email and SMS alerts and that works fine my major
gripe with BB at the moment is that when I acknowledge an alert it stops
sending SMS out to everybody and waking them up which is cool but I
can't seperate the email side of it which means I can not set up BB to feed
the email alerts into our trouble tcketing system.  

BB also has IMHO a hideous logging system where each alert is a seperate
text file which resides within a directory structure with machines at
the top and each individual test displayed out underneath it.

I am sure people with decent perl skills could deal with pulling info
out of this quite easily but if don't it becomes a real PITA
