I enjoyed the Stroud rev 4 book when I was doing the engineering maths in
class but I have had a flick through it and I would like something that has
more explanations as I am not going to be in a class next year.

I have covered differentiation and integration but for some reason in maths
3 we did not do any matrice work. Admittedly this is linear algebra but I
have been writing some bits and bobs using OpenGL for an engine of sorts and
they are great for this sort of stuff. This is also the reason why I have
decided to study maths next year rather than UML/Java, maths is not going to
disappear in my lifetime but I doubt Java will still be around.

Stroud does go over most of the stuff but his books are very fast and very
sparse in explanatory text, if you do not get each step then you are
buggered, there is no attempt to see things from any other angle. I have
used his book in the past as a reference but I doubt I could use it as a
self study book unless I switched off the bit in my head that constantly
asks "but why?"
