Are you using DHCP on smoothwall?  I'm using DHCP here and it works great, have win95, win98, XP, 2000 and Debian clients all worked straight off.  You can still set up static addresses on clients that need if you want.

I also dropped the clockspeed of the CPU down to 75Mhz (was 90) so it runs cooler since it's running all the time up in my loft/roof.  I was using an old P75 originally and the motherboard went on it which didn't supprise me as the CPU always seemed very hot.
