BTW, I think the /proc one is the one you are interested in.
On a server you really should increase the default limit.
Been there, done that, picked up the pieces...

But do you really have user or system processes which need the file
limits set?
(No doubt the reply will be 'Of course - reason is xxx.'
And I shall kick myself for not seeing the obvious)
