In my opinion, we are much more likely to gain, since one of the reasons
for having predictable dates is to enable others, including students and
tutors, to come along. There is NO agreement that additional meetings at any
venue should not be arranged. A few years ago, I was almost guaranteed not
to be able to attend at weekends (nor almost any other time) because of
work, while some of my ex-colleagues work a two week shift pattern which
guarantees that they will be working every second weekend, but we are not
able to please everyone.
My own feelings about having the lectures, discussions, and installation
demonstrations, are that I do not want to miss out on any of them, but that
the lectures on any one subject are only likely to occur every so often, so
I prefer not to miss them. Not everyone wishes to attend every lecture, so
it is good to have other things at the same time. I do not consider myself
as being more advanced than beginner, (the more you know, the more you know
that you don't know), but I am happy to help if and where I can on initial
installations, etc, so do not object to separate meetings dedicated to
installation problems and demonstrations. I even have some older kit and
second-hand monitors which could be suitable for demonstrating initial
installations.
I have suggested that a way of by-passing the legal PATT safety testing
problem for private kit may be to use fully safety tested mains isolating
transformers, but these are big, heavy, and not very cheap, and their use
still has to be agreed by the insurance company. (It was standard practice
in my old job). The university does have their own PATT testing equipment,
but we can not demand to be able to use it.
