Next GLLUG meeting

The date that has been in your diaries for over a month now is Saturday
14th September, the meeting will run from 12noon until 5pm.

We will be meeting in the New Cavendish Street campus of Westminster
University, this is in the shadow of the BT Tower, nearest tube stations
are Great Portland Street and Goodge Street. You will find a map at [
http://www.wmin.ac.uk/static/maps.asp ]

We have three talks planned for this meeting. These will be in
the large lecture theatre:-

* Around 1pm Frank Pohlmann will tell us about the current state of
Unicode/UTF-8 and how it is implemented on Linux.

* Kim Hawtin is going to give us a short introduction to Wireless
networking and the implications it will have, followed by a question and
answer section. Sometime about 2pm.

* Around 3pm, Paul Nasrat: Will tell us about his involvement with ELKS -
The Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset (http://elks.sf.net)
The the ELKS project is building a small kernel subset of linux to run
on the 8086 and 286 machines. The talks will cover the ELKS projects
current status, how it differs from Linux, what uses there are for
ELKS, why develop for it and future roadmaps.

* To round the meeting off, starting at about 4pm, Steve Cobrin will chair
an open forum discussion. The topic is open, but some topics to get you
thinking could be 'Why should I buy a commercial distribution?', 'KDE vs
Gnome vs Blackbox, etc.' and maybe even 'The future for GLLUG'.

Do please be aware that we can't guarantee that the talks will happen at
the times stated, but we will do our best to make sure they are.

*****

Away from the formal lectures, we have two rooms set aside.

The network lab, as it is known, will be used for some rolling demos of
Linux being installed and configured.

We also have the Multimedia room. This will be used for people to set
is up their own machines, using the monitors if needed. You can do this
if you have something to show off, or you are looking for a solution to
some problems. If your are bringing in your own machine, make sure you
sign it in when you come, otherwise security won't let you take it when
you go! Best to write your name on any lead and stuff before hand.

This is also the place you can go to should be looking for sanctuary
away from the formal talks.

*****

For the latter part of the afternoon, after 3pm, Josette Garcia from
O'Reilly will be with us, so if you are looking to buy some O'Reilly
books, now's your chance. And yes - we do get 25% off the cover price.

*****

After the meeting, for those that want, the group will move off to 'The
Green Man' public house, very close to Great Portland Street. We should
be there from 6.30pm, the downstairs bar is reserved for us. Even if
you were unable to make the daytime meeting, please feel free to come
to the pub do. To help you find the pub have a look at
