Thanks Paul, I'm using Debian stable, apt-get the dev libs for x and ssl worked.  I get an error when I compile now...

gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.   -I/usr/X11R6/include  -g -O2 -c kbd.c
gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 11
make: *** [kbd.o] Error 1

Are there libraries I need for the keyboard as well?  I can't find (not sure what to look for) an error log for gcc to know where in kbd.c it got stuck.  Had a quick look in kbd.c but don't really know what I should be looking for.
