This sounds similar to the problem I posted a while backa bout samba
broadcast packets not going over VPN.  SMB uses broadcast packets for
various things such as announcing which computers and shares are available
on the network, therefore machines that do not see the broadcasts cannot see
the shares.  You can solve this by setting up your samba machine to be a
WINS server and then configuring the remote client to use the linux box as a
WINS server.
