This is [as well as being more offtopic than the previous offtopic
posts] a significant difference between cars and cyclists that car
owners don't seem to grasp.

Cyclists are out in the open, with a flimsy piece of aluminium (or
whatever) that you can usually pick up with one hand. We have little
security.

A car is somewhat heavier and, importantly, sturdier. As a result
drivers get a [false?] sense of security.

It's for this reason that applying motor vehicle rules to cyclists won't
work (and why attempts to do so have irritated cyclists so much).

Certainly a large number of cyclists need laws (esp. in cities), we just
need different laws.
