[Gllug] can't switch between virtual terminals

I'm at home now so can't test this - but this sounds like a promising 
route - will try tommorow

it doesn't seem to be common to all debian systems - the computer I'm 
using now (debian testing) allows me to start X apps as root from an 
xterm (using su)

I don't normally need to run X apps as root - I'm really just wondering 
if this is a symptom of the same problem...
