dunno, could be. what does iptables show?

maybe you loose connectivity from the LAN side, when teh default route
is changed?
have you looked in the log files? try tailing the log file when you try
an start a conenction, that'll give you an idea at what its hanging at.
what makes you think its a DNS problem? can you reach sites on the
internet via the dialup? perhaps by IP address if your DNS is broken.
