[Gllug] Booting Mandrake 9.0 on laptop stalls at "Starting pcmcia"

I just loaded Mandrake 9.0 on a second partition (hda6) with Windows XP
on the first as on my 3 desktop machines.

Even using a boot disk I haven't managed to boot into the installation
once. Each time it stalls at:

Starting pcmcia
####################

I tried booting it in console/text only mode with a Knoppix 3.1 boot
disk+CD-ROM but even that stalled with:

PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not available because of resource collisions
