Could be wrong but it sounds like a LILO or GRUB problem (They are boot
managers/loaders).
You don't say what distro you are using so I don't know which of the
above you are using.
However try man lilo, man lilo.conf if it is lilo, I haven't really
messed about much with GRUB but I reckon a similar search of the man
pages should help.
