[Gllug] Recommendations for network card and adsl modem (orrouter)

Whoops I'm on windoze and accidentally hit the wrong keys and sent the last
email off.

It's the SpeedTouch USB 330. It's not the green frog. It's a purple un-frog
like thing. I've got Suse 8.1 Professional.

I've tried the user-space drivers from sourceforge and just get LCP
timeouts. I've got no idea how the modem knows what to talk to. Perhaps that
is the problem. On the other hand, the alcatel speedmgmt daemon and
kinternet (or ifup dsl0) gets as far as the "Connect: ppp0 <-> 0.38" message
in /var/log/messages, and then nothing. A minute or so later the machine
hangs with flashing keyboard lights. Again the modem appears not to know
what to talk to. I only have the Tiscali nameservers and no gateway IP. My
IP address and it seems that of the gateway is dynamically allocated. The
modem was free so I'm quite happy to dump it. I know of someone who had no
problems getting the modem working with Suse 8.0 and Tiscali. However, what
he did I'd already tried unsuccessfully.

The "route PRINT" command on windoze gives:

As I said, I tried the bridging method by using the br2684ctl command (I'm a
networking newbie I hasten to add) to create the allegedly infamous nas0
interface. ifconfig nas0 reports an ethernet address but pppd nas0 complains
about nas0.

I've also re-installed Suse a few times.

So yes. I've totally given up. I'd rather be doing some Java development and
learning more about J2EE, struts etc. so I can fulfill my goal of moving
jobs this year; in this respect, the modem has cost me.
