I would doubt that being the cause.

A Celeron is supported as a Pentium II or III (depending on its age) by the
kernel, and I think the rest of the system should cope as well.

I would be tempted to try Debian on your system. If that doesn't work, it would
be interesting to hear exactly what happens.
