[Gllug] IDE drive detection

I have a 1u rackmount server which I set up with Linux a while ago, and
would now like to put into service. Trouble is, it's stopped working.
When last booted (month or so ago) all was fine, now, it can't see it's
hard disks.

3 IDE disks, connected as primary master, primary slave, secondary
master. The primary master is not being picked up by the BIOS. Using an
80 conductor cable, with drives on primary channel jumpered correctly.
When I remove the cables, no drives are detected. Reconnect the master
alone, and it comes up. Reconnect the slave alone, all is similarly OK.
When I plug both drives in on the cable together, the BIOS will see the
slave, but not the master.

I've swapped the IDE cable, with no effect. I've changed the jumpers
from master/slave to cable select on both drives, with no effect. Both
drives can be felt to spin up fine. I'm now confused. Anyone seen this
before.

Mike. (I hate misbehaving hardware)
