The Debian team decided that the major memory handling change part way
through the development of the 2.4 kernel interrupted the Debian testing
cycle, so they offered the choice of either 2.2 or 2.4 kernels for the
current stable distribution. If you are not able to boot from CD, make sure
that you have the matching pair of rescue and root/boot floppies. I would
definitely recommend the version they call bf24 (kernel 2.4).
Most kernel modules will be loaded automatically if required, or can be
selected later, but I would recommend that any ethernet modules required to
connect to the internet, perhaps via a local network, are installed and
connections made or modem connected so that the installation system can
access the Debian websites and install all the most recent versions and
security updates immediately, even if you intend to install using a full
current set of CDs. Allow the installation system to see all the CDs and
look for an internet connection, you will then be asked to install CDs as
required.
Tasksel will install a default selection for each option chosen, which
can be modified using dselect, or a very basic default installation will be
completed without selecting anything. Tasksel and dselect can be re-run at
any time to adjust the initial installation. Dselect gives the option of
using apt facilities, or apt can be used independently.
