Hi,

Thanks a load, I never thought about the "If it breaks part".
Really appreciate the advice.

Kind regards

It depends why you're doing it. Is it as a favour to someone that works
at the company? Is it purely to make some money? Are you going to be paid
for ongoing supoprt?

If it's just for money, then charge a reasonable amount for your time.
Last time I did anything like this, I charged 50 quid/hour, but that was
nearly a decade ago, and I don't know what the current market rate would
be.

If it's for a favour, then consider picking a fixed price and do it for
that. How much are your weekends worth to you? Pick a price for which
you'd be happy to give up your free time, but obviously don't set it so
high that it'd strain your friendship with whoever you're doing it for.

Be careful, though, that you won't be expected to be on the end of the
phone when it breaks[1], unless they're prepared to pay you to come
and fix it.

[1] Yes, you can set it up and leave it, and everything should be OK.
Both Linux and Samba are very stable. But what happens when /var
runs out of inodes due to mailman logging (a common problem on RH
machines)? There will always be problems. Consider getting them to
agree to either having a dial in modem, or providing you with ssh
access to the box, so most problems can be fixed remotely.
