Okay, sods law, as soon as I emailed I found the solution, the email 
title to the answer was a little mis-leading.  I read it as I was 
wondering what else people were getting upset with

In general: When OpenLDAP (slapd) seems to run wild or does no longer 
work at
all, try the following command:

rcldap stop
db_recover -h /var/lib/ldap
rcldap start
