Regarding this comment:

"Hopefully the UK will see the madness in all this and refuse
to play Brussel Sprouts."

You don't seem to realise that it was YOUR UK representative that is causing
all this hassle re software patents in Europe (not EU patents) while other
representatives were initially listening to reason. This mess we're in is
probably because of the British government's peculiar attitude towards the
EU, which is similar what the masses seem to believe: that the EU is evil
and everything being quoted forth by Blair good, even if it means that
Britain will have to become the 51st state of America. But Britain still
wants to meddle in European affairs and traditionally opposes everything
that comes out of Brussels even it is is about something that the people
WANT for a change. Ironic, isn't it.

Anyway, perhaps you haven't had the chance to read some details of the case
so, here it is:

As for what you / we can do about it? Giving up in a situation like this is
like sticking your head into a nice pile of sand. Of course you could do
something about it, but that would involve having to do something about it,
which of course interferes in our daily routines of our very important
little lives. Geez, let's not stand up and fight for something which is
going to really screw up life for future generations of programmers. :)
Apparently there is a patent application for an if - else statement. This is
something you could start opposing immediately.

With respect

Dear GLLUGers,

The problem is that the eurocrats are not morons. They are,
in fact, quite clever and adept in the areas that matter to
them, e.g. their salaries and their jobs.

Unfortunately, they are susceptible to lobbying (because
this is the drivel they regurgitate all the time) and the US
has been lobbying the EU extremely hard for the EU to come
into line with the US on software patents.

Hopefully the UK will see the madness in all this and refuse
to play Brussel Sprouts.

Regards,
