Gosh a third post to myself - quite a soliloquy :-)

The error was caused by a user removing a USB mouse from the server and
the resulting errors heading to the .xsession file

Just before my methods are questioned I should point out that I do
consider it unusual to run X on a server, there are however extenuating
circumstances.
