Yes they can ping but...
One PC (Win 2K) on a network occasionally seems to 'nod off' for 30 seconds
or so when working with files on the Linux server.
Last time I was on site I saw a flash of a "Network cable unplugged" mesage
on the Windows screen so I think that the PC is convinced that it is being
disconnected every now and again - strange.
I'm just trying to eliminate things one at a time.

Plug two machines into a cheap (10 quid) switch, and see if they can
ping each other. If so, your cables are fine :-)
