Does it work with a stable kernel on a similar configuration?

Yes: I'm running Red Hat 8 on it. Though I am using their rpm-based kernel,
rather than a custom one.

"Similar" configuration is difficult to estimate - as the 2.5 setup is so
much richer in options than 2.4
