A good tool to get started is GQ <http://biot.com/gq/> which can create 
entries, and do some LDAP administration.

As for creating the accounts I've done it before with another vendors 
inferior broken LDAP service (MS AD) using Comma Seperated Values files 
created from spreadsheets. I guess your school will hold student names and 
info in this format. LDIF is pretty straightforward as well.

Postfix has good LDAP integration, and can use it to perform address 
lookups and rewrites so when designing your schema be sure to include all 
the attributes you would need for all services.
