On a now defunct (dot doomed) site; we checked for not Netscape 4.7 and then
used css. Netscape just got the unstyled document. (Made the site look like
Lynx...)

There are lots of alternatives to that, including all sorts of clever tricks
one can use in the style sheets themselves to make Netscape work; but I
personally think that's making a rod for your own back, as the next
revision/patch of the same browser version could change the way the tricks
are interrupted.

This isn't free; but is absolutely excellent in these situations.

Also, maybe try out http://www.evolt.org/ and their "thelist" mailing list;
lots of designers trying for standards compliance there.

Also, the usual suspects:
http://www.alistapart.com/
http://glish.com/ (on right hand side has an "outside reading" section with
lots of good links)
